昨日書いた they の話。
まだ読了していなかったこの本でもたしか言及されていたはず……と思って、ちょっと確認してみました。
こちらの訳書が出る前に、原書を読み始めていたのですが、

原書では、読み始めてすぐ they の話が出てきたように記憶していました。確かめたところ、Prefaceの最後のほうに脚注として載っています。
1. Throughout this book, I will be using the singular “their” in place of the gender-neutral “his” or the awkward “his or her” when the gender of the referent isn’t known. I know some people think this is controversial, but this usage goes back to the fourteenth century. Better writers than I have used the singular "their" or "they" and the language has not yet fallen to hell.
そこで、訳本のほうではどうなってたかな……と思ったら……あれ？
おー、なるほど。
訳本では原書のPrefaceがなくなって、かわりに「訳者まえがき」が入っていましたね。たしかに、これは妥当な判断かもしれません。英語圏と日本で、想定読者に向けた「まえがき」は同じでなくてもいいわけですし。
では、ここ以外の本文では they の話はなかったっけ― はい、あります。
原書はKindle版なのでページでは書けませんが、"Pragmatic" の章の終わり近くです。
But write <they enjoy working on their car> and the peeververein will descend to bewail your use of the singular “they,” though it’s not exactly transparently singular here.
たった3行のこの原文を読んだだけでも、 翻訳なさった皆さんの苦労が偲ばれます！
これに該当する箇所、訳本では173ページです。原書のほうは、Preface の脚注で they について触れているので、ここに注はありません。が、訳本ではここが they の初出なので、原注とは別に、
2019年、メリアム・ウェブスター社は"they"を゜ノンバイナリーな三人称単数を示す代名詞として登録した
という訳注をちゃんと付けてくれています。昨日書いた nonbinary は「ノンバイナリー」というカタカナ語になっています。
翻訳するだけでかなり苦労したであろうことは間違いないこの本に、こうして細かく訳注まで付けてあるところは素晴らしいと思いました。
ということで、読み切らなきゃ……。
