Clubhouseという音声SNSアプリに、こんな通知が届きました。
伏せ字にしてる人、実は最近しばらく会ってなかった知り合いだったので、本当はゆっくりおしゃべりしたかったんですが、それはさておき、下線を付けた they の話です。
ご存じのとおり、最近の英語では he/she の代わりに they が使われることがあります。仕事で扱う英文でもぼちぼち見かけるようになってきましたが、アプリのインターフェースで見たのは初めてかもしれません。
それでふと、辞書では they がどう扱われているのか調べてみたくなりました。
念のためですが、they で不特定の三人称単数（he/she）を指す使い方は、容認度の差こそあれ古くからある用法なので、これは今回のテーマではありません。辞書で、以下のように説明してある使い方です。
2 《口語》 [anyone, everybody など単数の不定代名詞や each, every に続く名詞を受けて] ＝he, she.
・Nobody ever admits that they are to blame. 自分が悪いと認める人はだれもいない.
★性差別を避けるため he or she を使うが, 簡潔さを欠くため口語では they で受けることが多い. 【新英和大】
そうではなく、上の通知画面のように特定の人を指すときに he/she を避けて they にする用法を探します。
当然、手元の英和辞典はひとつも対応していません。最新でも2019年発行くらいなので、編集時期を考えるとしかたがないでしょう。もっと新しく出た辞書なら対応していそうな気もしますが、手元では確認できませんでした。
まず、American Heritage。おなじみの Usage Note 欄も含めて詳しく書かれていました（赤字は引用者、以下同様）。
2.b. Used as a singular personal pronoun for someone who does not identify as either male or female. See Usage Note below.
Usage Note（抜粋）：
The recent use of singular they for a known person who identifies as neither male nor female remains controversial; as of 2015 only 27 percent of the Panelists accepted Scout was born male, but now they do not identify as either traditional gender. With regard to this last sentence, the Panel's responses showed a clear generational shift: the approval rate was 4 percent among Panelists born before 1945 and 40 percent among Panelists born later.

d —used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary (see nonbinary sense c)

性別を明かしていない場合（3c）と、当人が自らジェンダーを超えようとしている場合（3d）とで分けてあるところがいいですね。

最古の用例はTwitterのツイート、2019年の用例は、Netflixのドラマ『Orange Is the New Black』 に関する話ですね。どちらも実に現代的。
ところで、語義説明のなかにnonbinaryという単語が使われています（non-binaryという綴りもあり）。これも英和辞典にはまだ載っていない語（義）ですが、英英で確認できます。

研究社さんの KOD も、こういう変化にはもっと早く対応してくれるといいのになぁと思います。
