という表現を見かけた。原形は gaslight だろうけど、国産の英和辞典と、Logophileに入れてある英英学習辞典では、ちっとも見つからない。よくあるように、英辞郎とWiktionaryには載っているのでアタリはつけられるのだが、もちろんそこでやめるわけにはいかない。
英英のオンラインを確認すると、

あたりには載っていた（英英でも、やはり学習クラスには載っていない）。しかも、語源は1944年の映画作品で（後述）、OEDの用例も1961年のものからある。
にもかかわらず、国産の辞典がちっとも載せていないのは、いったいなぜなんだろう。大辞典クラスに載ってなくて、他の辞書も収録項目を決めるときその基準に倣ったとか、そういうことなのか。こういうこともあるのだなあという事例なのだった。
以下は、見つかった各辞書の記載と、語源の話です。
まずは、OEDから。用例は最古と最新の2つだけ載せます。

OED の語源セクションを見ると、なんと出どころは1944年の映画『ガス燈』だということ。ジョージ・キューカー監督、イングリッド・バーグマンがアカデミー主演女優賞を取ったあの名作ですね。これを観たことがある（または原作のストーリーを知っている）人なら、この gaslight の意味はもよ～く分かるでしょう。語源を知っていると単語の意味がよく分かるという、まさにその典型でした。
イングリッド・バーグマンは、『カサブランカ』のときより、こっちのほうが美しかった気がします。
あ、そうそう。タイトルに「ガス」が付く映画といえば、本邦の『ガス人間第一号』も忘れちゃいけませんね。
こちらの主演女優の美しさも、バーグマンに負けていません。東宝特撮作品のなかでも一二を争う名作です。
